Puly Caff Descaler for Espresso or Coffee Machines

An important cleaning process to be done once in a while, if the water is hard with calcium.

Note: The powder is without many enhancers for better food safety control. It may appear a little caked but it’s working perfectly and fully dissolvable.

This descaler will be great for most domestic machines. If you are descaling a machine which has a boiler inside, this product is not recommended due to technical reasons, please use the Pulycaff liquid descaler which does not require hot water to activate and has lesser detrimental effect.

Puly Caff Descaler for Espresso or Coffee Machines

What

Descaling is necessary if the espresso machine had accumulated a lot of minerals from the water. It is much better to treat and soften the water than descaling an espresso machine too much.

Severe amount of mineral build-ups can cause sensors to malfunction, creating various issues which can be hazardous. However, we must warn that the descaling agent may not be able to reach the key components to clear off limescale adequately. Users should not be using mineral or Alkaline water for coffee machines. This product is for most types of domestic espresso machines.
Descaling can be a challenging process. For the best effect with the least damage, it should be done by a qualified technician.

Puly Caff Descaler for Espresso or Coffee Machines is in powdered form, is food grade and in individual sachets for easier storage.
The powdered version can only work with hot water and is less damaging to metal. Product has to be dissolved fully before using.

When

It is hard to judge when is descaling needed as it depends on the amount of usage and the hardness of the water. For users who diligently soften their water to be good enough for their espresso machine, they may never need to be descaled.

Using a water softener as a preventive measure should be the correct way to go than frequent descaling.
Users can use this product for regular preventive descaling to clear off light layers of build-up.

How

The instructions below are for clearing light layers of build-ups along the water circuitry.

If your machine wasn’t purchased from Fine Coffee Company, please refer to your vendor for instructions.

Who

For users who want to do light and preventive descaling, it’s possible that the user can do it themselves.
For severe cases, please contact a qualified serviceman.

Disclaimer

Do note that the instructions below are not sufficient to clear off a huge amount of limescale or all types of limescale. It is also not possible for the descaler to reach all ends of the machine, especially to the top of the boiler to clear off limescale around key components.

Also be aware that descaling often voids the warranty for most professional machines including those sold by us as descaling is a very erosive process.
It’s not uncommon for problems to arise after descaling. This can happen when bits of limescale can’t dissolve completely but flake off the walls, and end up choking a valve. Or key components that could be damaged in the process, especially if the process was incorrectly done.

We will not be responsible for any damages or hurt that might be possible during the process.
We do not advocate in heavy and frequent descaling, we firmly believe that the correct way is to prevent limescale from building up by using softened water.

Please refer to a qualified technician if you suspect that your machine has a huge amount of mineral build-ups.

Instructions

The below instructions serve for machines sold by Fine Coffee Company and are not applicable to every brand in the market.

Please refer to your machine’s user instructions for more information.

How much to purchase?

The product comes in sachets of powder.
For every pack, mix with 1000ml of water.

You will need to purchase the amount according to the size required by your machine.

Descaling procedures

Water that is fed into the machine must NOT be hot. Else it could release silicone fittings causing major leaks. Dissolve the citric acid and let it cool to room temperature before use.

Do note that the following descaling instructions, will not entirely remove limescale from the machine as the descaler cannot reach the top of the boiler, or reach every corner of the water circuitry.  It will be better than the components located at the top of the boiler, to be either replaced, or inspected during maintenance. A machine should only use softened water to maintain its internal condition, reducing the likelihood of extensive repairs.

Single Boiler and Heat Exchangers

IMPORTANT FOR VIBRATION PUMPS: KEEP THE INTERVALS OF IT WORKING AT MAXIMUM 30 SECONDS. FOR EVERY 30 SECONDS OF THE PUMP WORKING, REST IT FOR 30 SECONDS.

The video below should work for heat exchangers. If your machine is a Strega, skip the part on using a blind filter.

Draining the boiler.
1. Heat up machine regularly till it’s ready and pressurised.
2. Switch off the machine and immediately drain the boiler by releasing water from the water wand. If there’s no water wand, release from the grouphead followed by the steam wand.

Filling boiler with descaling agent. Please dissolve the descaler totally before using and make sure that the solution placed fed into the machine is NOT hot.
3a. If the machine has a water tank.
i) Replace the water in the tank with an appropriate amount of descaling agent.
3b. If the machine doesn’t have a water tank and can only draw water from a water network.
i) Get ready a water container that can store the amount of descaling agent.
ii) Disconnect water hose from the water network and place hose into the water container containing the descaling agent.
4. Switch on the machine. The machine should draw the descaling agent into the boiler.

REMINDER AGAIN!

IMPORTANT FOR VIBRATION PUMPS: KEEP THE INTERVALS OF IT WORKING AT MAXIMUM 30 SECONDS. FOR EVERY 30 SECONDS OF THE PUMP WORKING, REST IT FOR 30 SECONDS.

5. Flush about 10 seconds of water out from the grouphead, steam wand and water wand.
6. Insert a blind, pressurise the grouphead with descaling agent drawn from the water tank for 5 times. [NOT FOR BEZZERA STREGA, NEVER USE A BLIND FILTER FOR STREGA!] 7. Allow the descale agent to heat up in the machine as citric acid works well only when heated, we suggest not leaving the agent in the espresso machine for more than 30 minutes.

Rinsing with clean water
8. Repeat step 1-2 to drain all the descaler out of the boiler
9. Replace water tank with a tank of clean softened water. Make sure the water tank was cleaned first.
10. Switch on the machine to draw clean water into the boiler

REMINDER AGAIN!

IMPORTANT FOR VIBRATION PUMPS: KEEP THE INTERVALS OF IT WORKING AT MAXIMUM 30 SECONDS. FOR EVERY 30 SECONDS OF THE PUMP WORKING, REST IT FOR 30 SECONDS.

11. Repeat step 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 for one to two more times if necessary.

It is not possible to fully drain out the descaler from the boiler. If you wish to know if you had flushed enough to get rid of the descaler from the boiler. Draw some water from the boiler, and sprinkle some baking soda on it. It should not fizz. For a short moment of time after descaling, the water may seem to have more bubbles or have a light odour. The descaler is food grade and will diminish after a period of usage.

It is important to remember that vibration pumps should not work for 2 minutes without 1 minute of rest. Rotary pumps should never run without water passing.

Double Boilers

We will suggest requesting for professional help due to complications.

WARNING:

1. NEVER allow your pump to activate for more than 120 seconds and work for too long with rest time, it will damage the pump.

2. Water that is fed into the machine must NOT be hot. Else it could release silicone fittings causing major leaks. Dissolve the citric acid and let it cool to room temperature before use.

3. DO NOT perform descaling and grouphead flushing with detergent back to back or together.

4. Flakes of scales and impurities may cause technical issues after descaling. Fine Coffee Company will not guarantee and does not warrant user’s machines from malfunctioning after descaling.
