La Pavoni Espresso Machine

Searching for the La Pavoni espresso machine?

It’s one of the potential retail brands that we once considered in Singapore.

The Italian company La Pavoni has been around for a long time. The company was well established and known for their La Pavoni Professional range.

La Pavoni created beautiful machine but most of their domestic espresso machine made by them feature only single boilers. In Singapore, we’ve decided not to launch La Pavoni espresso machines. We have a wide selection of espresso machines from other well-known brands. One of them has a longer history and superior machine options. That’s the renowned Bezzera, which you may discover on our primary website www.finecoffeecompany.com. Bezzera is a manufacturer of espresso machines based in Milan, Italy. They are the first company to develop an espresso machine and have been in operation since 1901. Bezzera is one of the few Italian manufacturing firms with a complete production facility that can construct an espresso machine from scratch.

The main reason we chose not to carry La Pavoni is that we do not think that single boilers like the La Pavoni Europiccola, fit the demand of most users nowadays, especially in Singapore where drinkers prefer espresso drinks like latte or cappuccino.

What is a single boiler?

A single boiler espresso machine has only one boiler that is used to brew coffee and steam or froth milk.

What’s the problem with single boilers?

If you only have a single boiler, and you wish to make a single espresso and steam milk for lattes, you must wait for the boiler to reach steaming temperature before brewing your espresso. To create space for building steam, you must switch between modes and perform certain boiler emptying practices. You must concentrate on the light indication to see what is going on and the boiler pressure is correct. This may be rather laborious and time-consuming for some customers, especially those who are in a hurry in the morning rush hour.

Also, the temperature of the group head fluctuates wildly between the various modes and users frequently have difficulties maintaining thermal stability and producing excellent espresso. This will make it extremely difficult for customers to try different coffees. Single boilers were one of the most popular machines in years gone by. There are now a multitude of superior alternatives that are almost every way better than single boilers.

Because of its small size, the steam wand is weak. Because a compact appliance’s boiler is typically small, the steam wand isn’t very strong. If the user is reckless or manages poorly and fails to fill the boiler with water, they might easily damage their heating element.

What type of boiler systems should be used?

espresso machine on all the time

Nowadays, most premium espresso machines come with heat exchanger boilers. It has a specially designed boiler, having a compartment inside a boiler. Drinkers of cappuccino or latte love such espresso machines.

With it, you do not need to switch modes and worry about consistency. You do not need to switch modes. Switch it on and let it heat. Once ready, you can do both frothing milk and espresso extraction at the same time.

Users can focus on their grinder to dial their roasted coffee beans to the right grind size. Like a barista, can put their remaining time, working on their other tools like the portafilter or tamper. Full attention to the sign from the coffee extraction to pull great espresso. Or working on how to pour the milk froth with a lovely texture.

Another problem with La Pavoni Espresso Machine

The La Pavoni Europiccola or similar range is a manual lever espresso machine. Meaning you have to use your hand to manually push out the coffee and set the pressure on the fly. Meaning the user has to stick their eyes on the pressure gauge with control on the lever to make sure that the extraction pressure and flow is steady. The user must also set the pre infusion carefully and this directly affects the crema which is the foam on top of the espresso, and taste.

This can create a lot of consistency issues as the human error factor is much higher. Making espresso with this espresso machine definitely has a steep learning curve which may not appeal to a user looking for a fuss-free solution to making.

It only has one steam tap, having no wand for water.

What about the newer La Pavoni E61 machines

E61 is an open patent espresso machine and is available from many brands.

Though it’s not a lever espresso machine but it sure is easier to produce a good espresso shot and has a larger boiler. A large boiler ensures better thermal stability, meaning less guesswork in the temperature on the brewing group head but will increase the start up time.

What brand should you get?

If you like the best lever espresso machine for the best espresso, then you will have to consider the Spring Lever espresso machines, like the Bezzera Strega. This concept was formed in 1942.

Bezzera Strega TOP

This beautiful machine extracts espressos at varying pressure so you get the benefit from a lever espresso machine. It releases a wider spectrum of flavours for great espresso. In fact, this spring piston lever concept is the same brass brewing group used in the larger commercial machines, almost the same as what’s found in the La Pavoni Professional series, using the commercial class 58mm filter holder..

Despite its simplicity, brewing espresso with the Bezzera Strega is easy to create real cafe quality coffee, as you get both the strong steam pressure and brewing profile as in cafe machines. The chance of human error is reduced or to the minimal effect.

This machine requires less maintenance and has the reliability that lasts the longest among all types of espresso machines of the same league. As the extraction is done by the compression of spring the pump pushes its pressure.

Thermal stability is much better due to heat exchanger boiler system. it has both a steam arm and a water wand. Since it’s a heat exchanger boiler system, you can make milk based coffee like cappuccino or lattes easily as you can pull a shot and flow your espresso at the same time.

If you like the E61 system, why not consider the Bezzera E61 range. Made with mostly solid metal like chrome stainless steel, copper and brass. You can also upgrade to wooden handles.

This is an example of an E61 Grouphead.

Or the even better BZ electrically heated group head that are really clean in the grouphead, meaning minimum maintenance and poor good espresso. The beauty of the BZ line is its speed in heating out. Thanks to its intelligent design, there’s no need for largely constructed chassis to get the same thermal stability in the brewing group. The BZ range series sell by itself for its latest innovation and reliability.

And it’s coming from a brand that has been around for almost a century of solid reputation. From the original inventor of the modern espresso machine. You not only paying a better price, you are paying for a known reliable brand and a collection of history.
